HOBO NICKELS n.3 - The Psalter as a Book of Needs- St. Arsenios/St. Paisios.

$13.00

Saint Arsenios of Cappadocia was not only the beloved and respected spiritual leader of Pharasa in Anatolia, he was also spiritual father to St. Paisios of Athos, who he baptized and named. He guided and protected his people while the area was under Ottoman rule, secretly teaching the children of the region to read and write in Greek. Eventually he led his flock to Greece after a period of genocide. The Saint died only three months later.

On that 400 mile journey St. Arsenios brought his Psalter, in which he'd assigned particular Psalms for different prayers, blessings, and needs.
Not only is it a thoughtful way to pray the Psalms, it is also a picture of the daily life and concerns of an Anatolian village priest of the time. Years later when St. Paisios compiled the story of his Godfather he included these assignations.

They are all here in this Psalter, organized according to need. The book also includes the story of St. Arsenios, quotes from St. Paisios of Athos, a table of contents (for topics and needs), and a table of psalm locations (to find quickly by number). (And if you'd like to read and pray the Psalter through in the regular order, each Psalm ends with the page location of the next.)

These are hand bound, approx. 5 1/2" x 4". The cover is a simple thick material (see individual options).
